This map of California notes the locations of the various campuses of the UC system. But it’s a bit of a puzzler. Obviously, there is no UC Mount Hamilton, but that’s the location of the UC-operated Lick Observatory. La Jolla? With a little digging it seems originally, UC San Diego was to be UC La Jolla, but “UC President Clark Kerr satisfied San Diego city donors by changing the proposed name from University of California, La Jolla, to University of California, San Diego.” So that would date the image to the late 1950s. But the absence of Santa Barbara makes that unlikely, since it became part of the UCs in 1944. So I guess the reference to La Jolla must mean Scripps Institution of Oceanography, which was run by the UC like the Observatory for ages. Likewise, Davis and Riverside were not yet full UC campuses, but rather the Ag College and the UC Citrus Experiment Station. So maybe the image dates from circa 1940. Or maybe they just didn’t like Santa Barbara.
