Paige pitched for decades in the Negro leagues and then entered the majors at age 42. He bounced around a lot, and in kindofa stunt, pitched part of one game for the lousy Kansas City Athletics against the Red Sox in 1965 at age 59. Per Wiki: He walked off to a standing ovation from the small crowd of 9,289. The lights dimmed and, led by the PA announcer, the fans lit matches and cigarette lighters while singing “The Old Gray Mare”.
The A’s never had a winning season in their 13 years in Kansas City and shortly afterwards moved on to Oakland and better things.
