Korchnoi-Kasparov 1983 in Pasadena… not

We’ll stick with the chess theme. This great poster touts the semifinal match in the World Chess Championship between Soviet Gary Kasparov and Swiss (since defecting from the Soviet Union in 1980) Viktor Korchnoi . It was to have been held in Pasadena in August 1983. I use the odd verb tense because it didn’t happen. Top level chess players are known for their anxieties and Kasparov complained of the summer heat in California. And there may also have been anxieties about him defecting to the US. In any event, the match did not occur, but was later played in London, where Kasparov won. He also went on to defeat Smyslov in the finals, and then there was the Championship match with World Champion Karpov. The championship match lasted 48 games and several months without anyone reaching the 6 wins necessary. The match was controversially ended without conclusion, for the benefit of the players’ health.

The restarted match in 1985 was won by Kasparov.
