What’s a Chicago brewery to do when Prohibition puts you out of business? If you’re the Schoenhofen Edelweiss Brewing Company of Chicago in 1920, you start making a green lime-flavored soda. Allegedly, Green River was second only to Coca Cola for a time, but fortunes faded, although the brand has remained alive passing from hand to hand. Sales in Chicago soar whenever St. Patrick’s Day approaches and the Chicago River turns green (but not with Green River).
