Times were different. And places are different.
Wikipedia provides some valuable information on the history of the brand. Originally marketed in Shanghai in 1933, the Chinese name of the toothpaste is “Black Person Toothpaste”. The company that made it was acquired by Colgate in 1985.
Four years later, they changed the name to Darlie and altered the artwork a bit. But the Chinese name remains the same and it is still sold in Chinese language areas “where its brand and logo are not considered offensive.”
