Great coin commemorating the ’68 Olympics in Mexico City. Famous for the Black Power salute in the men’s 200 meter, and a lesser known protest by gymnast Věra Čáslavská, who turned her head away during the Soviet Union’s anthem due to its invasion of her homeland, Czechoslovakia. But this detail from Wikipedia tickles me: “The introduction of doping tests resulted in the first disqualification because of doping: Swedish pentathlete Hans-Gunnar Liljenwall was disqualified for alcohol use (he drank several beers just prior to competing).”
More infamously, the (US-backed) Mexican government cracked down on student protests before the events resulting in the deaths of dozens to hundreds of protestors.
